Charles Foley of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), heard the first reports of the white giraffe in Tarangire National Park in 1993. For 12 years he was especially attentive to the living legend in the performance of their daily work, the study population of savanna elephants in the park.

"In 1994, the comments have stopped coming, so I assumed he was dead, it was in the hand of man or animal," Foley said in a news release from WCS. "I have never ceased to look good."
